OPPO breaks into top ten smartphone brands, with 50 million unit sales in 2015

Several former household names of the mobile phone business, including BlackBerry, HTC and Sony, have slipped out of the “major league” in the past couple of years, with Nokia (temporarily) gone from the industry, and Microsoft incapable of leaving a mark.

Naturally, a number of device manufacturers previously deemed a part of the smartphone landscape’s second tier used the free fall of the above listed giants to their advantage, improving their global brand awareness and sales figures primarily with an emphasis on reasonable quality-price ratios.

Huawei impressively managed to exceed 100 million unit shipments for the first time in 2015, Xiaomi continued its (slow) rise to the peak despite falling short of ambitious objectives, while OPPO reportedly climbed over Vivo, ZTE, plus Sony, Microsoft, HTC and BlackBerry to make the worldwide top ten.

The sleek, classy and almost bezel-free Oppo R7 can be pre-ordered for $400 in the U.S.

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Oppo announced the R7 and the R7 Plus at an event in Beijing during May. The expectation was for the R7 to have a bezel-free display, a feature which had been the focal point of most leaks, but in the pictures the final product appears to have a relatively normal display, albeit with thin bezels and covered in 2.5D glass. Here’s everything you need to know about the new phones.
Updated on 06-25-2015 by Andy Boxall: Added in news the R7 is available to order in the U.S.. Pre-order for shipping in July

$483 for the Snapdragon 615 Oppo R7?

We’re already used to the idea that Oppo phones always have an added premium, but how to you guys feel about the possibility of $483 for the Oppo R7?

If you have seen the various photos and video’s of a borderless Oppo phone posted online then you have seen the Oppo R7. The R7 is set to be a slender magnesium phone with zero bezel design heading to launch later this month.

Specifications for the new phone include a 5-inch 1080p display, octacore Snapdragon 615 chipset, 2GB RAM, 16GB internal memory, 2320mAh battery , 13 mega-pixel camera and a thickness of only 6.3mm.

If the leaks are anything to go by then it is a lovely looking machine with a beautifully crafted design, but it is going to be a little pricey.

Leaked images from an internal Oppo presentation show that Oppo intend to target the Huawei P8 with the R7 and will price the phone at 2999 Yuan (The P8 is 2888 Yuan). That’s roughly $483 for a Snapdragon 615 phone!

Oppo Find 7 getting a long overdue Lollipop update

Believe it or not but owners of the Oppo Find 7 are still running Android 4.4 Kitkat, but come May Lollipop will finally arrive.

Although the OnePlus One and the Oppo Find 7 are essentially the same device, customers who opted for the Oppo Flagship are at a slight disadvantage when it comes to getting the latest Android updates.

Finally though, the Oppo Find 7 is going to receive an Android 5.0 Lollipop update with the a coming ColorOS update in May. The coming version of ColorOS will be based on Android 5.0.2, at this moment details of the ROM and any additional features are currently not known.

You’ll probably want to own the OPPO R7 after witnessing the crazy edge to edge screen!

The Nubia Z9 has been getting a lot of media footage lately, which is something the guys over at OPPO don’t fancy too much perhaps. Which is why, a few pictures and a video of a rival device has been making rounds on the internet today!

The OPPO R7 is an upcoming powerhouse from the Chinese OEM, which is not only expected to be super slim, but is also going to have a crazy edge-to-edge screen. The phone will have a MediaTek MT6795 SoC along with a 21 mega-pixel camera, so it isn’t just the design that you’ll be wanting the R7 for.

The screen uses some sort of a tapered coating which helps the R7 achieve the ‘edge-to-edge’ screen design, which in fact may not be the case.

Super slim OPPO R7 incoming with MT6795 SoC

OPPO has been on the forefront of design experimentation (the company itself would call it ‘innovation’) through the past couple of years, producing swivel camera phones, and super slim devices that are so thin they lack 3.5mm audio ports.

According to an Indonesian certification body, OPPO will once again be taking a plunge into the deep world of slim phones with their upcoming OPPO R7. The phone will reportedly feature one of the most anticipated processors — the MediaTek MT6795, which is also rumoured to be sitting in the heart of the upcoming HTC E9.

Not a lot is known about the upcoming OPPO R7, however. What we can say for certain is that the phone will be super thin, for it will have a legacy to follow. And, if it does ship with the MT6795 SoC, the R7 will be quite a powerful phone… OPPO will have to cram quite a bit into a thin frame for that.
